Sir William Alexander Smith (Octo ), the founder of the Boys Brigade, was born in Pennyland House, Thurso, Scotland. He was the eldest son of Major David Smith and his wife Harriet. Smith was an army officer and Sunday school teacher, born in Thurso, who created the Boys' Brigade with the aim of promoting 'the advancement of Christ's kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.'. The Boys’ Brigade started on 4 October and by the first Inspection in March the uniform consisted of a red ribbon rosette, worn in the buttonhole, made by William Smith’s wife. This first uniform was always worn over ordinary clothing of the day.

William Smith took a leading role in the new organisation, accepting a full-time post as the first Brigade Secretary in He worked non-stop for the movement, on two occasions even crossing the Atlantic to promote the Boys' Brigade in Canada and the U.S.A.
